Note how the approach section of the flume sticks out of the manhole barrel as well as the elevation difference between the inlet pipe stub (right) and the outlet pipe stub (left).  This change in elevation is necessary to ensure that free-spilling discharge is present under most circumstances (other than downstream submergence).
