Staff gauges are used to provide a visual indication of the depth water in a flume or weir.  Staff gauges can also have flow rate increments for a direct reading of the flow rate.

When used to meaure water level at a dam, lock, lake, pond, lagoon, river, or stream, head or level gauge is the more proper term.
