H Flume Measuring No-Till Soil Erosion Runoff
Description
H flumes are commonly used in edge-of-field (EOF) applicaitons to measure runoff and excess nutrient loads. They can also be useful in quantifying soil erosion.
Here a sediment is collected from a no-till soybeam field. Arable soil is critical component in field fertility. By limiting the amount of soil erosion leaving a field, farmers can preserve longterm productivity. Prairie stips can dramatically reduce the amount of errosion and phosphorus / nitrogen runoff by as much as 90% among otherwise identical fields.
While erosion within the field system, erosion within fields still occurs - however cover cropping and no-till production can reduce even this.
