For a Weir function properly the weir pool, or body of water upstream of the weir, must be of the correct size.  Weir pools smaller than those recommended artificially accelerate flow over the weir crest - resulting in readings that underrepresent the actual flow over the weir.  

Weir pools larger than those recommended for accurate weir flow measurement do not adversely affect weir accuracy.
