For water flow measurement, a Flume in an open channel accelerates the flow of slow, subcritical water to a fast, critical or supercritical state.  

The transition generates a known water level-to-flow relationship which allows a user to determine the flow rate by measuring only the water level at a specific point.  

Think of this transition as similar to the way air can be accelerated from a sub-sonic to a super-sonic state.
