How Does the Parshall Flume Work? | Open Channel Flow
Skip to main content

The Parshall Flume works by accelerating slow, sub-critical flow, to a faster critical / super-critical state. It does this by both contracting the side walls and dropping the elevation of the floor.  As a result, under free-flow conditions, only one level reading is needed to determine the flow rate through the flume.  The location as which the level reading is made is termed the primary point of measurement, Ha.
